Essential Tips for a Smooth Photography Session with Your Baby
As a photographer, I always advise fellow photographers to include important information in their welcome guides for parents ahead of their sessions. This helps ensure everything runs smoothly for all involved.
Many parents worry that their baby might not ‘play ball’ and that the session will be a disaster.
I always reassure them that we go with the baby’s flow. After all, it’s unrealistic to expect to predict exactly how a baby or child will behave, and stressing over it only adds to the pressure.
What should you bring for your baby?
The usual changing bag essentials, just to be on the safe side. Other than that, just bring your little one! Most studios, including mine, provide outfits, changing mats, nappies, wipes, and other necessities.
If you’d like, feel free to bring along any sentimental items you’d like included in the photos.
And of course, don’t forget your baby’s formula and bottles!
Upon arrival, I will ask for your baby to be changed (if needed) and fed. This helps ensure they’re as content as possible, and let’s face it, milk-drunk babies make for the most peaceful, sleepy photos!
The studio will be kept comfortably warm for your baby, with the temperature monitored throughout. I’ll handle settling and positioning your little one, while you can sit back and watch the magic unfold.
Keep an Open Mind During Newborn Sessions
It’s important to be flexible with your expectations for newborn sessions. Fixating on a specific pose or photo may lead to disappointment.
For instance, if you’ve set your heart on a shot with your baby asleep on their front, with their legs curled up, it’s good to be open to the fact that the baby might not be comfortable in that pose.
If, for example, your baby isn’t keen on being placed on their front or doesn’t want their legs tucked up, we’ll simply move on to another pose.
Ultimately, your session will capture the most beautiful memories, and that’s what truly matters.
I welcome families from all over to my Oxfordshire photography studio for newborn, maternity, and family photography. I absolutely love what I do, and nothing is ever too much trouble and always ensure my clients receive my newborn photoshoot advice, ahead of their session.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your photographer – there are no silly questions around here!
With love,
